Syracuse Crunch/Local Firefighter Night

1/13/2017 (Permalink)

As a way to give back to those in the community that helps everyone in a time of need, SERVPRO of North and East Onondaga and Oswego Counties hosts a Syracuse Crunch/Local Firefighters Night at a Syracuse Crunch hockey game. Our owner, John Halko has been supporting the Syracuse Crunch/Local Firefighter night for 9 years. This tradition started in 2009 when John wanted to show appreciation to local fire fighters and their families for the hard work they put in to our community. They make themselves available to the community and our families to protect us and help in times of need.

We send out flyers, post on social media and visit each of the local fire stations in the area to let fire fighters know that we are offering 150 free tickets to the Syracuse Crunch game. This year’s Syracuse Crunch/Fire Fighter night will be held on Friday, January 20th at 7:00PM against the Binghamton Senators at the War Memorial Arena. Local firefighters can contact our office by email at Sales@SERVPRO5941.com or by calling our office at 315-457-3432 to request tickets for themselves and their families. Tickets will be delivered to each fire station before the event. Firefighters can pick up their requested tickets at their fire station.

During the hockey game, we usually toss t-shirts or hats as an extra token of appreciation. We are looking forward to this year’s event! If you know someone who is a local fire fighter in the CNY area, please give them the information so they can get their free tickets! Please note that tickets are limited.

Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Service your winter gear! Get your snow shovels out. Make sure they are in good condition. If not, you’ll need to get new ones. Better to have everything ready rather than wait until the first snow!

Clean up and put away your summer gear. Drain the gas and oil from your lawn mower and weed eater. Clean this lawn equipment and move it into storage for the winter. Leaving this equipment outside during the winter months can reduce the life expectancy.

Revitalize your lawn! Fall is the best time to rejuvenate your lawn! Fertilize and reseed any areas that need a little extra love.

Winterize. Wrap up and put hoses into storage. Insulate outdoor faucets and winterize your sprinkler system. You want to avoid pipes freezing and adding wear and tear on the exterior fixtures.

Schedule maintenance for your chimney! You should have your chimney cleaned and inspected every year. This will reduce the likelihood of smoke or soot damage in your home. Having yearly maintenance on your chimney will also keep your fireplace in its best condition. You want to be able to use your fireplace to keep warm on those cold nights ahead!

Check your gutters. During the fall a lot of leaves, double samaras (also known as helicopters), twigs and other debris get blown around and often find a home in your gutters. It is important to make sure your gutters are clean and rain water can flow easily thru your downspouts.

Change your air filters. According to energystar.gov, you should change the filters in your home either once a month or once every three months depending on the type your using. Check the manufacturer’s label on the filters your using to find out how often you should change the filters in your home.

Schedule for your HVAC unit to be serviced. Having your HVAC unit serviced can ensure that your furnace is ready to use when the weather gets colder. Having regular maintenance on your HVAC unit can also help with the efficiency of your furnace.

Have your ducts cleaned. By having your ducts cleaned you are helping your furnace to pump the warm air more efficiently through your home. If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating one or more of the following:

  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Odors
  • Dirt and debris
  • Other contaminants

For more information on HVAC and air duct cleaning call us today at 315-457-3432. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have or schedule to have your air ducts cleaned.

The History Behind the Make a Wish Golf Tournament

Make a Wish

Owner of SERVPRO NE Onondaga and Oswego Counties John Halko, knew when he got into the business that he would always give back to the community, specifically children. Halko came from nothing and knew if given the opportunity, he wanted to give back to those in need. The idea of a golf tournament came about when other SERVPRO’s recommended it as a great way to bring people together in the business world. Chosen on a recommendation from Nationwide agent Vinny Hollopeter 14 years ago, The Pompey Club proved to be the perfect setting for the event. At first, each year money was raised for a different organization. One year it was the Canteen in the North Syracuse School District, the next Hospice to remember a friend and of course Make a Wish. One year, Halko hit a road block with an organization he was trying to work with so after feeling a bit discouraged, he decided that from then on they would donate to Make a Wish every year because “they appreciate what little we can give them.”

Make a Wish is a nonprofit organization that grants wishes to children with terminal diseases. Halko recalls when wishes were $5,000 and now one wish is approximately $10,000. The goal every year is to grant at least one wish. He plans to achieve his goal with participants in the tournament who donate $100.00 to play golf and receive a free lunch and steak dinner, sponsorships, 50/50 raffles, mulligans, skins and of course, donations. When asked what he considers his most successful year with the tournament he replied; “Every year we can give Make a Wish something. It doesn’t matter how much.”

SERVPRO is partnering up Uno's Pizzeria in Fayetteville! If you purchase a meal or drinks next Thursday May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) and either mention SERVPRO/Make a Wish or print the coupon in the photo, 20% of your bill will automatically go to Make a Wish foundation of Central New York!

Spread the word to your friends, family and co-workers! One wish is now up to $10,000 so we are trying to acheive at least that amount by our golf tournament in the beginning of June to make one child's wish come true.
